2 1/4 cup flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3/4 cup white sugar 1 cup (2 sticks) softened butter 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 package (12 oz) chocolate chips 2 little bags 1/2 cup each, walnut pieces, crushed about chocolate chip size.
Preheat oven to 375. Combine flour, salt, baking soda in small bowl, set aside.
Combine brown sugar, white sugar, butter and vanilla and beat until creamy. Add eggs to this and beat some more.
Gradually add and beat in dry ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Form balls, or drop on ungreased cookie sheet, bake 8-10 minutes. Makes approx 100-120 cookies.
High Altitude: Increase flour to 2 1/2 cups, and decrease each of the sugars to 2/3 cup. I like to add a couple tablespoons of water into the dough as well. I am not sure what defines high altitude, only that Colorado is. LOL
I've tried making these cookies without following the directions precisely, ie: mixing everything together at the same time, not following the high altitude directions, etc. and have met with disasterous results.

Do you remember the old recipe? It called for shortening or butter. Mom always used the shortening.

I was wondering if before shortening it was lard. I guess I'm gonna have to have my friend show me how to make lard <G>

I always use butter but I have tried using the butter flavored shortening and it was pretty good.
